Super Netball Round Nine wrap up

Super Netball round nine was a dark one. Collingwood Magpie Madi Browne announced her retirement and a host of players succumbed to injury.

Injury reared it’s head over this round of Super Netball. The Swifts, keen to rebound after their loss to the Vixens last round, were without Helen Housby, their star shooter. Housby had corked her left calf in the round eight match against the Vixens. The Magpies were dealing with their own injury issues with Kelsey Browne sitting out the match due to injury while sister Madi announced her early retirement due to injury. Not to mention West Coast Fever fearing the worst for mid-courter Ingrid Colyer who went down with a knee injury during their win over the Firebirds.

Before the beginning of the season, Erin Delahunty wrote about how the news of a condensed season ‘prompted fears over injury and player burnout’. Erin spoke with applied sport science researcher Dr Rich Johnston who said that ‘injury could be the price to pay for asking teams to back up too quickly’.

It would seem that those fears were well founded. With the season not yet over, it remains to be seen what the full impact of such a condensed season will have.
