What we do

Create opportunity

Sports media is a desirable and therefore competitive industry. For women and non-binary people, who are often in the minority in the male-dominated press box, the competition is made even harder.

What you need is someone to open a door, to throw down a ladder, to give you an opportunity. That’s where we come in.

  • We create opportunities for women and non-binary people in sports media through paid commissions, partnerships and programs.
  • When we commission you, we work with you to develop an idea, prepare for an interview, craft your story – we can tailor our support to meet you where you are.
  • Our Emerging Sport Writer Program provides an opportunity to develop skills, learn from experts and build networks all while being paid and getting your work published.
  • Through our partnership with ABC Sport, we offer paid commissions and tailored editorial support.
  • Siren internships are designed to help you build the skills you want. From writing to social media marketing, we can leverage our platforms and networks to ensure you walk away with valuable and useful experience.

Build community

Throwing open the door is one thing, but finding your people on the other side? That’s priceless.

At Siren, community is central to everything we do. We consistently look for ways to build community, opportunities to nurture community and chances to facilitate community.

How do we do that?

  • Through our networking events for women and non-binary people in sports media.
  • Through our informal mentoring.
  • With our workshops and events.
  • With our social media presence and newsletter and podcast.

Develop resources

We’re always learning at Siren, developing skills and refining our approach, and we know you are too. But we also know that everyone is starting from a different place, so we develop resources that cover a wide range of topics and are aimed at a variety of skill sets.

It’s not just about giving you a 101. It’s also about creating a supportive framework for you to learn in. A place to ask questions and to ask for help.

  • Our Emerging Sport Media Program is packed full of fantastic resources that you get to keep!
  • Through our partnership with ABC Sport, we’ve developed video resources on a range of topics.
  • We lead and host workshops and events designed to help you pick up new skills or polish up old ones.
  • Plus we have a range of Siren resources available on our website and a huge archive of fantastic sports content.

Celebrate our community

Change is tough. It takes perseverance and determination. But it also takes recognition and celebration. We’re big on the first two and even bigger on the last two.

We love to celebrate our community and the work of women and non-binary people in sports media. We do that through our newsletter and podcast and on our social channels. And we’re always working on new ways to celebrate and recognise the women and non-binary people in sports media who give us so much joy!

Newsletter

Our newsletter launched in 2020 and we continue to use it as a platform to recognise and celebrate our community, to share work from women and non-binary people in sports media, and to shout out the content you should have on your radar.

Our newsletter is guided by the part of our mission that says “elevating women’s voices, alongside other diverse and marginalised voices to deliver feminist sports content” and so that’s what we do.

Podcast

Launching in 2021, our podcast has been a place for the conversations that don’t always fit in the newsletter. We discuss all sorts of things from sports fandom and culture to our fave pop culture x sport crossover moments. We also chat with women and non-binary people in the industry, learning from them and their experiences and insights.

Sometimes those conversations are tough. Sometimes they are a mountain of joy.

Our podcast is currently on hiatus. We look forward to bringing it back to you very soon!

Other projects

We do other things too! From copywriting to audio production, from campaign design to research and analytics.
