With the generous support of Football Victoria, Siren is excited to offer more Emerging Sports Writer Programs for women wanting to work in sports media.
We are thrilled to announce another round of the Siren Emerging Sports Writer Program!
We are equally thrilled that this round is supported by Football Victoria.
Football Victoria CEO Kimon Taliadoros said the partnership aligns with FV’s commitment to equality, both on and off the pitch.
“Participation for girls and women has gone from strength to strength in recent years, but it’s equally important that we invest in supporting equality off the pitch,” Taliadoros said.
“Promoting opportunities for women in sports media will provide a greater voice for women in football and build stronger pathways for women seeking careers within our beautiful game.”
As a part of this partnership, FV and Siren will collaborate to select applicants who are particularly passionate about football media, who FV will then sponsor to participate in the program.
This program seeks to give emerging sports writers needing additional support and experience, an opportunity to transition from higher education, writing courses or other professional sectors, into the environment of sports media.
The Siren Emerging Sports Writer Program is for women or non-binary folk who are at the beginning of their sports media journey and are looking for opportunities to have their work published, build a portfolio and gain more experience about the field of sports journalism.
Who is this opportunity for?

The Siren Emerging Sports Writer Program is for women or non-binary people who are at the beginning of their sports media journey and are looking for opportunities to have their work published, build a portfolio and gain more experience and skills in the field of sports writing.
We encourage budding journalists and writers who are entering the sports media space to apply—whether you’re about to finish, or have recently completed a tertiary degree or short course in journalism or writing, if you are looking to enter the sports media space after spending time in another field or are just looking to get stuck into working in the space.
This iteration of the Siren Emerging Sports Writer Program is supported by Football Victoria and a passion for, or interest in football (round-ball football!) is preferable. You do not need to be a football expert, this program will incorporate some assignments that are football focused and will provide the assistance you need to work through them.
You must be over eighteen years of age and have an ABN (Australian Business Number) to apply.
The Siren Emerging Sports Writer Program is delivered online so you can be based anywhere in Australia and we encourage applications from those living in regional or rural communities.
You must be available to deliver on each assignment set within the six-week program (one piece every two weeks) and the start date of the program can be negotiated on your availability.
The Siren Emerging Sports Writer Program provides a $500 stipend to the program participant which is sponsored by Football Victoria.
Over a six week period, the program participant will produce the following pieces for publication on Siren to assist with their development in the field:
- 1 x commentary/op-ed/historical piece (topic to be workshopped by the program participant and Siren, working through the craft of pitching, approach to research and interviewing)
- 1 x interview/profile (this can be an interview the program participant sources or one that Siren assists with securing, with the program participant learning the craft of pitching, research and interviewing)
- 1 x commissioned piece (this will be a story that Siren commissions the program participant to write, learning the craft of writing to a brief)
Alongside writing 3 pieces for publication, the program participant will also receive mentorship and advice around the following topics:
- Finding and sourcing stories
- Interview preparation and interviews
- Writing in various styles
- Working with an editor
To apply, please send a cover letter and CV to email@example.com with ‘Emerging Sports Writer Program Application’ in the subject line.
Your cover letter should address why you’re passionate about pursuing a career in sports media, detail your passion or interest in football media, what skills you’re keen to continue to develop and we’d love to know who your dream women in sport interview would be.
Applications close 5pm AEDT on April 6th.
We look forward to welcoming another emerging sports writer into the Siren family thanks to Football Victoria!
